Passenger who attacked Leeds taxi driver is jailed




A MAN who repeatedly punched a Leeds taxi driver in the head has been jailed for 22 weeks.

Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard taxi driver Mohammed Saghir picked David Sargent, 43, up from an address in Leeds just before 1am on December 4 last year.

Prosecutor, Marie Austin-Walsh said Sargent, of Ramshead Heights, Seacroft, was unhappy that £2.80 was already showing on the taxi’s meter.

Mrs Walsh said: “He began punching him while the vehicle was still moving.”

The court heard Sargent continued attacking Mr Saghir after he stopped the taxi, before smashing the driver’s side window with his fist.

Sargent admitted assault and criminal damage.

Mitigating, Mark Pritchard said his client has had a problem with alcohol and has undergone a treatment programme.

District Judge Marie Mallon Jailed Sargent for 16 weeks for the attack on Mr Saghir plus six consecutive weeks because he committed the offence while subject to a 12 week suspended sentence imposed last November after he admitted a previous assault.
