Pair targeted taxi driver after threatening to ‘blow up’ mosque

THUG Ryan Taylor told a taxi driver how he was going to blow up a city centre mosque and kill 250 people – moments before his mate stole the man's takings.

Victim Narzul Islam was too frightened to challenge Taylor over his threatening behaviour, which began when they drove past City Central Mosque in Hanley.

Taylor's friend, Ricky Perks, who was sitting in the back seat of the taxi, tried to calm him down. But when the pair arrived at their destination in Clayton, Perks grabbed the driver's takings for the day while Taylor, who had refused to pay the £7.50 fare, distracted him and tried to steal his sat nav.

The men ran off, with Perks getting £150 in notes and change. Taylor, aged 28, of no fixed address, was arrested the next day and his fingerprint was found in the vehicle.

Now the pair have been jailed for a total of 20 months for their part in the robbery on September 11.

Taylor was sentenced to eight months after he admitted racially aggravated harassment and attempted theft.

The court heard his difficulties stem from an addiction to monkey dust.

Perks, aged 24, of Third Avenue, Kidsgrove, was jailed for 12 months for robbery. He was given an extra 16 months after pleading guilty to making threats to kill his former partner, Alison Dale, and stealing her mobile phone.

The court heard that eight days after the incident with Mr Islam, Ms Dale spotted Perks outside her daughter's school. She activated a panic alarm, but also called police on her mobile phone.

Perks grabbed the phone and escaping on a stolen bicycle. In the early hours of the next morning, he text his sister and threatened to stab Ms Dale.

Prosecutor Glyn Samuel said: "He said, 'She's getting stabbed up 100 per cent. I know her address now. I told you I would find it by the end of the week. Trust me, I will be locked up for a very long time. Make sure you tell her she's got hours left'."

His sister told Ms Dale to tell the police, and he was arrested later that day. Mr Samuel read out extracts from Ms Dale's victim personal statement. It said: "I think he will kill me one day. When I was told about the text messages, I was physically sick."

Jason Holt, mitigating, told the court Perks was drunk when he sent the messages, but he did not mean them. He said: "He accepts what happened was wrong.

"He accepts he should have understood she didn't want to be with him and his actions were entirely wrong, but they are set in the context of a very difficult relationship where clearly, in her mind, she doesn't want to be with him and is fearful of him, but gives him signals that leads him to believe that's not the case."

Judge Paul Glenn imposed an indefinite restraining order, banning Perks from contacting Ms Dale.

He told him: "Until you sort yourself out, there's a high risk of you re-offending."
