Maximum taxi tariff comes into force in Wiltshire next week A maximum tariff will come into force on May 8 A NEW uniform tariff system for taxis will come into force next week so that passengers will know the maximum amount they are going to be charged whatever their starting point is in the county. Currently, passengers can be charged different rates depending on where they are in Wiltshire and the zoned system was inherited from when the council became a unitary authority in 2009. The change will see a maximum amount being set for taxi journeys anywhere in the county with taxi firms being given the option to charge less if they wish. Peter Hutton, portfolio holder for public protection services said: “Taxis provide a valuable 24-hour service which also contributes to the economy. “These proposals follow lengthy consultation with taxi drivers and will mean when you take a taxi journey in Wiltshire you know the maximum it will cost wherever you are.” Taxi drivers have already been consulted on the changes over an eight week period last summer with the proposals agreed at a licensing committee.
