ELECTION 2015: LIB Dem Stuart Burke does not believe 'Taxi-gate' affected his campaign

Ousted Shenley Brook End Liberal Democrat Stuart Burke believes peoples votes were not swayed by his part in Taxi-gate back in November 2014.

Mr Burke was the chairman of the licensing committee that granted Nadeem Ahmed Kiani a private hire taxi licence in 2011 despite his conviction of rape in 1994.

Conservative Councillor Hiten Ganatra won the seat by just under 300 votes and Mr Burke was naturally disappointed at the result.

He said: "If I'm honest I don't think taxi-gate has affected my chances because, my colleague in Bradwell has got elected and he was involved in it and I didn't and I was involved in it.

"Clearly it hasn't, it may have made a difference with some people but I didn't see it when I was door stepping and talking to people.

"The electorate have made a decision and I have to accept that, I have been on the council 17 years and if they have decided they think someone else can do a better job that's their decision.

"I think the realisation that the General Election is probably what has done for me, the Labour vote has gone up and I know a lot of those have voted for me previously.

"We will wait and see how the new guy does in the job."

Mr Burke was a little worried looking into the future at the prospect of five years with a Conservative government.

He said: "I do worry that as a country we have become a lot more liberal with a small 'L' and little more right wing which worries me because that is not a good thing, but I'm a Lib Dem so I'm going to say that.

"We have been down at this point before and hopefully we can come back because I think the Lib Dems are good for the country although people don't realise that at the moment, they may look back and think."

"We are now in for five years of serious Conservative austerity, if we thought people had suffered the last five years, you wait and see folks, and this is not going to be pretty."

Winner of the seat Councillor Ganatra will be celebrating his victory by picking his kids up from school and having a sleep.

He said: "I feel shocked, I was up against a very strong candidate and the national picture certainly helped but it was sheer hard work and campaigning that got us over the line.

"It is a blood bath Labour have lost so many big guns and it is a shambles for the other parties and there really is only one leader for the next couple of years and that is David Cameron."

"I really want to look at making a difference from angle and cutting down on waste and to serve the people of Shenley Brook End.

"It has been an incredible few hours and internally we have been speaking about how it would go and the fact we have done it is incredible."
