its not often around here that you are asked if you take credit/ debit cards. I don't have one, although I did try one a good few years ago, but it came at a cost, and was rarely asked for, I find it easier to go via a cashpoint, and quicker too. A couple of drivers have a machine, and last year I passed on a Birmingham airport to one of them. Today, an intending passenger heading to the front of the rank was ambushed by the bestest friend of the other machine owner. The driver ( fourth in the queue )declared that he was going to take the job because his friend had a remote terminal, and he could therefore phone the punters card details through to his buddy and partner in crime to pay the fare. I advised the intending passenger that there would be an illegal transaction, and did he really want to pass on his card details through to a person he had never met, and never would meet, where he would not see the amount entered into the machine, ( if, indeed it was capable of taking a remote payment) I mean, if you went to a restaurant, and when you wanted to pay, was told we don't take card payment, but my brother in Halifax does, would you hand over your card? So. Is it possible, although not advisable, to make a third party payment via a mobile terminal? There is no arrangement on the tariff sheet for a card surcharge. Legal? Bye laws here state don't take the job if you're not front car. He claims to have reported me to the LA, but for what, I can't imagine. |

Well I read your byelaws - it does say that - intriguingly according to the byelaws you can smoke if the passenger doesn't mind though! This of course if you are Licensed in Lincoln. |

So, anyone pass a terminal around between different drivers? |

There are lots of reasons why passengers should be able to choose and not be forced into the front cab. Superstition, lots don't like green vehicles for example. Unstated xenophobia obviously. Method of payment. Knowing and preferring a driver further back. Knowing and preferring not to travel with the driver at the front. This byelaw prevents customer choice and could do with being challenged and amended. |

Having fairly recently (2009) undergone changes to the byelaws in Plymouth, I am very aware of the trials and tribulations. I would suggest that "customer choice" in various primary legislation would actually make your byelaw 7(e) completely unenforceable. |

Anyway, have you got a mobile terminal? A simple yes or no would suffice. |
