Taxi bosses in Clydebank brush off competition concerns after Glasgow Taxis drop dreaded boundary charge



TAXIS chiefs in Clydebank are not worried about competition after Glasgow Taxis Ltd dropped their boundary charges. In fact, both Clydebank Taxis TOA Ltd and Clydebank Private Hire have said business is great — and have brushed off concerns the city’s cabs could compete with their lower prices.

Glasgow Taxis announced after its recent AGM that extra charges for trips across Glasgow City Council’s border would be ditched. Applying only to orders taken via telephone or the company’s app, the cheaper fare means people could avoid ordering taxis from Clydebank to pick them up from within the city.

Martin Hambley, of Clydebank TOA Taxis said: “I don’t think the fact that they’ve dropped their boundary charges will affect our business. Our fares are already lower than Glasgow Taxis. I can’t see us having a problem as business is good and our drivers are providing an excellent service. We’re experiencing a nice bit of growth.” David Hamilton, owner of Clydebank Private Hire, added: “I’m not worried at all about Glasgow Taxis dropping the boundary charges — as far as I’m concerned it’s long overdue.

Clydebank Private Hire is doing really well and even with the boundary charges dropped we will still have better fares.” Previously journeys with Glasgow Taxis Ltd would see customers charged up to 33 per cent more on their fare just for going outwith the city. A price would have to be worked out prior to the journey due to the higher rate.

Stephen Flynn, vice chair of Glasgow Taxis Ltd, said: “The removal of the boundary charge for any bookings made by telephone will remove any confusion in this area while adding value and passing on savings to our customers. Fixed prices are easy to understand and provide certainty and reassurance for passengers.” -
