Sahak Dad: Derby driver jailed for nine years for raping teenager

A licensed driver who raped a teenager in his minibus in a car park in Derby city centre has been jailed for nine years.

Sahak Dad, of Stonehill Road, Derby, admitted sexually assaulting and raping the 18-year-old girl, when he appeared at Derby Crown Court.

He had driven to a isolated spot in a car park off Cathedral Road, where he locked the doors, grabbed her and pulled her towards him.

Despite her struggling and screaming, he pulled off her trousers before sexually assaulting her. He then raped her, the court heard.

Prosecutor Steven Coupland said: “He then pushed her away and drove off, telling her to put her seatbelt on.”

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the girl said: “He needs a long, long time to think about his disgusting behaviour and sexually distorted mind.

“It’s unacceptable treating another human being as a toy for their own demand, even more so when they have a duty of care to take you from A to B.”

She said she “could not bear” to use a taxi again and even if someone mentioned a taxi it made her think of “the most terrifying hour” of her life.

Jailing the 47-year-old, Judge Michael Fowler imposed a sexual harm prevention order, which bans him from working as a taxi driver or private hire worker in the future.

Mr Coupland told the court that Dad had been helping the girl transport her belongings so she could move in with a friend, after the girls had been on a night out together one night in February last year.

He said the friend had called Dad because she knew he had a minibus. He had not been working at the time but had agreed to do it for a fare of £30. The victim had never met Dad before.

Mr Coupland said: “He collected them and drove them to the complainant’s address and collected a large amount of property before driving to the friend’s address.”

But when they arrived the friend realised she did not have her house keys – she thought she had left them at the victim’s house.

“The defendant didn’t correct her but he knew he had them. The plan was for (him and the victim) to go back to her flat to look for the keys,” said Mr Coupland.

He said that as Dad drove to the car park, he started rubbing the top of her legs and she made it clear she did not want him to do this.

“When he parked, he carried on and she made it plain she wasn’t interested at all but he carried on,” said Mr Coupland. He then grabbed her arms and pulled her towards him at which point she started screaming and shouting and kicking out at the door.

Sentencing Dad, Judge Fowler said: “This is a singularly serious offence of rape. Count one (sexual assault) is part of the ordeal she suffered.” He said the features that aggravated the offence were “the breach of trust, the vulnerability of the complainant and the targeting and planning that took place in order for it to be executed”.

Baz Bhatia, in mitigation, said Dad, who also worked as a plumber and had no previous convictions, would never forgive himself for the shame he had brought on his family.

Jailing of rapist cabbie Sahak Dad prompts checks assurance by Derby City Council

THE jailing of rapist cabbie Sahak Dad has prompted Derby City Council to assure the public that taxi drivers go through a rigorous process to obtain their licences.

The 47-year-old was jailed for nine years at Derby Crown Court last week for raping an 18-year-old woman in his minibus in a city car park.

Dad, of Stonehill Road, Derby, admitted sexually assaulting and raping the teenager in February last year. He was also banned from working as a taxi driver.

After the case, a spokeswoman for the council, which is responsible for issuing taxi licences, has now said: "In the case of this driver, his licence was revoked by a sub-committee in September 2014."

When asked what measures were put in place to protect taxi passengers from such attacks, she said: "All our taxi drivers undergo a periodic disclosure and barring service check.

"They are also required under the terms of their licence to disclose any reprimands, convictions or warnings they acquire in the intervening period between their last check and the next.

"If any issues of concern are identified, they are obliged to attend a taxi licensing sub-committee meeting where a determination will be made about whether or not they remain fit and proper to continue to hold a licence."

In the case of Dad, the court heard he had driven to an isolated spot in a car park off Cathedral Road, where he locked the doors, grabbed the teenager and pulled her towards him.

Despite her struggling and screaming, he pulled off her trousers and sexually assaulted her. He then raped her.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said she could not bear to use a taxi again and, even if someone mentioned the word, it made her think of "the most terrifying hour" of her life.
