New Standards for Hampshire Taxi Drivers

New taxi drivers will have to show satisfactory English language skills and knowledge of the district, said East Hampshire District Council.

The new policy for the Hackney Carriage (Taxi) and Private Hire trade has been brought in by the council to improve the service and the safety of customers.

The policy also states that there will be tougher sanctions for drivers who breach their license.

Chairman of the Council's Licensing Committee, Councillor Bob Ayer, said: "We want to ensure out taxis and private hire vehicles provide a safe, comfortable, well-respected, professional service in our district.

"We have worked closely with the trade to shape this new policy and we will continue to listen to their views as we move forward."

Under the new policy taxis are now no longer required to carry a full spare wheel, but must still carry a space-saver spare or have flat tires instead.

Three-year driver licenses and five-year operator licenses will be offered instead license holders having to renew it every year.

There will be a wider range of vehicles for customers to choose from as there will be a wider range of vehicles which could be licensed as taxis and private hire.

So are they going to allow the driver to carry on working on a space saver which only has a speed limit of something like 40MPH and are only to be used as a get you home or to a place of repair.

Ours state the latter.

Some drivers round here have been driving around more than three days carrying passengers with space savers attached.
