New taxi code of conduct



North Kesteven District Council is to consult on adopting a Code of Conduct for taxi drivers, whereby those who choose not to sign up could face losing their operator’s licence.

The council’s executive board heard on Thursday from deputy chief executive Karen Bradford that those drivers not signing up would prompt a review of their licence.

She said: “It would be a condition of the licence and so there would be a full review and there would have to be clear reasons why they do not agree.”

Drivers would also undergo suitable safeguarding training to identify exploitation and abuse as well as informing them of expected standards of use of language and social media around young people.

This is in response to the recently published Casey report on Child Sexual Exploitation following last year’s independent inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, which found exploitation of at least 1,400 children in Rotherham, seen as a “collective failure” by both the council and police, partly due to weak and ineffective arrangements for taxi licensing.

Agencies have come together across the county to ensure licensing authorities are protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults and proposed a Code of Conduct. If adopted, all new drivers, and existing drivers upon licence renewal, will be expected to sign up to the Code. The new code could be adopted in September.
