Taxi driver who admitted doing 94mph in 50mph zone on M1 offers to do a ‘speed awareness course’A taxi driver who sped through M1 roadworks in Northamptonshire at almost double the speed limit has been banned from driving.
Mohammed Rahman, aged 54, was on the M1 northbound near Watford Gap Services when he was caught by cameras just after midnight.
Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard that his Mercedes was speeding at 94mph when the temporary maximum, because of ongoing roadworks, was 50mph.
It is not clear whether Rahman was driving his work vehicle on the night of the offence, November 10 last year, but he told the court he was not carrying a paying passenger at the time.
He also apologised and said he was happy to take a speed awareness course. However magistrates yesterday said his offence was far too serious,
Chair of the bench, Debbie Smith, said: “You were driving at an exceptionally high speed.
“As a taxi driver, you should be even more aware of the rules of the road and I think that makes this even worse.”
Rahman, from Birmingham, was instantly banned for 42 days and was unable to drive his car away from the court.
He was also fined £400 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £40 and £85 in prosecution costs.
