Minicab driver denies molesting girl, 17, with learning difficulties A PRIVATE hire driver accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl with learning difficulties has told a jury he was feeling for his cigarette lighter on her seat and never touched her indecently. Mohammed Adrees, 44, said the bubbly and talkative student was sitting next to him in the cab so he could hear what she was saying to him on the 35 minute journey. Adrees, of Ryan Street, West Bowling, Bradford, pleads not guilty to two offences of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in sexual activity, on April 1 last year. The jury has been told he is alleged to have committed the offences while working as a driver for Euro Cars on a local authority contract to take the 17-year-old girl to college that morning. It was only the second time he had driven her, the court heard yesterday. Adrees said he had been a minicab driver for a number of years and had no criminal convictions. He had done special training for "social" jobs with Bradford Council, including transporting passengers who were elderly or disabled. Adrees said the teenager was very talkative and on his first journey with her. She moved from the back seats to the middle row of his vehicle so he could hear her. The next day, he stopped the cab so she could transfer from the back to the front passenger seat. Adrees said she was very interested in boy bands and hoped to meet One Direction. "She seemed like a jolly girl. She was laughing and joking and full of life. Happy," he said. He asked her if he could smoke and she raised herself up on her seat so he could feel for his lighter. When he retrieved it, she told him she did not want him to light a cigarette so he put them away. After they arrived at the college, he apologised for asking if he could smoke on the journey. Adrees told the jury he did not touch the student sexually at any stage. The girl complained to her mother that Adrees felt her legs when she asked him if she was overweight. He is then accused of putting his hand down her knickers and putting her hand on to his penis over his clothing. She claims he asked if he could touch her breasts and she told him "no". Private hire driver found guilty of sexually abusing teenage girl with learning difficulties A PRIVATE hire driver has been told he is going to prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl passenger with learning difficulties. The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Roger Thomas QC, warned Mohammed Adrees it would be impossible to avoid an immediate jail sentence after a jury convicted him of molesting the 17-year-old Bradford student on the 35 minute journey to her college. Adrees, 44, of Ryan Street, West Bowling, Bradford, was today found guilty of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, on April 1 last year. The jurors convicted him by a majority verdict of 10-2. He was cleared of two further charges of sexually assaulting the girl at the same time. His barrister, Kate Batty, asked the court to adjourn sentence for a probation report. She said Adrees was a man of previous good character with a settled address in the city. Judge Thomas asked the Crown to obtain an updated victim impact statement from the Bradford victim, now aged 19. He rebailed Adrees with a condition that he does not contact the teenager or go within a hundred metres of her address. He was also ordered to immediately sign on the sex offender's register. Judge Thomas told Adrees: "It is impossible to see how this does not result in an immediate prison sentence." He said the conviction would prevent him from working as a cabbie again. Adrees must return to Bradford Crown Court on August 12. Prosecutor Michael Greenhalgh said the teenager was transported to college in the mornings by a Euro Cars cab provided by the local authority. Adrees asked her to move to the front passenger seat before touching her indecently and making her put her hand on his penis. The court heard that Adrees was not the girl's usual driver and it was only the second time he had taken her on the journey. She was talking to him about pop groups and her boyfriend. Mr Greenhalgh said Adrees stopped his vehicle and asked her to sit in the front passenger seat. She did so because she "didn't want to be rude". He told her not to say anything about what he had done when they arrived at the college. Minicab driver jailed for sexually abusing teenager with learning difficulties on trip to college A VULNERABLE teenage girl, who was sexually abused by a minicab driver taking her to college, has suffered a "catalogue of damage," a crown court judge said. Judge Roger Thomas QC told 42-year-old Mohammed Adrees he had destroyed the disadvantaged girl's efforts to be more independent. The victim, who has learning difficulties, was traumatised and had become withdrawn, moody and emotional, said Judge Thomas, the Recorder of Bradford. Jailing Adrees for three years, Judge Thomas said: "Her independence has been shot and she spends most of her time by herself in her room - a terrible catalogue of the damage you have done to her with this offending." Judge Thomas said Adrees had abused the girl while in a position of trust, and said it was unthinkable that the defendant would be licensed to drive hackney carriages or private vehicles again. "I would be staggered if they even contemplated it, and I am sure they won't," the judge said. Adrees, of Ryan Street, West Bowling, Bradford, had been found guilty, by a majority, at a trial last month, of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Adrees had worked as a private hire driver for nine years and had no previous convictions. The 18-year-old complainant had learning difficulties and had to be transported daily from her home in Bradford to a special education college in the Halifax area. She was provided, through the local authority, with transport by the private hire company Adrees worked for. Adrees had not driven the complainant before the week the offences occurred, in April last year. She normally sat in the back seat, but the defendant "inveigled" her to sit in the front seat so he could abuse her. He talked to her about personal matters about her boyfriend and then, under the pretext of reaching for his cigarette lighter, he put his hand down the back of her trousers and touched her bottom. Adrees then made her touch him indecently. Judge Thomas said it was a "very upsetting and disgusting piece of conduct for her." The judge said the victim had been in her last year at college and, with enormous support from her family, had begun to live something of an independent life and come to terms with the disadvantages from which she suffered. Judge Thomas added: "All that progress she was making, you have destroyed." Adrees's barrister, Kate Batty, said her client was a father-of-four and of good character. Detective Inspector Ryan Bragg, of Bradford District CID, said after the case: "This was a shocking abuse of trust by Adrees, who as a taxi driver, had a duty of care to look after his vulnerable passenger. "We would like to thank her for coming forward and hope that today's sentence gives her some comfort." He encouraged other victims of sexual abuse to contact the police. Speaking after the case, Councillor Ralph Berry, Bradford Council's executive member for health and social care, said: "Our thoughts go out to the young person involved in this distressing case. "The driver was put through the appropriate criminal records checks, although sadly these checks were unable to predict his future conduct. He was removed from duty right away and we reported the incident to the police as soon as it came to light. Why on earth would he want to smoke in his cab anyway? It's illegal. Is it my imagination, or is there a greater proportion of these reports containing Asian sounding names than English names? |
