Southport teen to skydive in memory of her dad

A Southport teenager is taking part in a skydive on her 16th birthday.

On Thursday (July 23), Katrina Halsall will jump out of a plane at 15,000ft and fall to the ground at a top speed of 120mph.

Katrina is performing the dive to raise money in memory of her dad, George Halsall, who died of a heart attack in 2013.

Loving dad-of-two, George, was just 46 years old when he passed away.

Katrina said: “I wanted to do something to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

“I am doing this in memory of my dad, because I want to, not because I have to.

“I’m so grateful for the support, so lets keep spreading the word and raise as much money as we can!”

George was a well-known figure in Southport , and was always very keen to improve the fortunes of the town and the people in it. He was one of the original volunteers behind Southport’s Charity Fun Fest, set up as a free fun day for local families which raised thousands of pounds for charities such as Queenscourt Hospice, Southport St John Ambulance and Southport PHAB (Pyhsically Handicapped and Able Bodied) Club. He was chairman of the event for a number of years, helping it grow substantially.

He was a campaigning chairman of the North Sefton Hackney Carriage Association who fought hard to improve the welfare of local taxi drivers. He was very involved with Southport Community Radio Station and the drive for them to get a full-time on-air licence. George was born on November 12, 1966 to parents George and Kathleen, and grew up on Sidney Road with his brother, Rick.

He went to school at Holy Family Primary and Christ The King High in Southport. After leaving school he trained as chef at the Viking Restaurant before working at the Bold Hotel, The Carlton Hotel and The Scarisbrick Hotel. He then spent 10 years with the Post Office and more recently spent five years driving a taxi with Yellow Tops.

George met his wife, Debbie – to whom he was married for 18 years – when he and his friend, Andy Taylor, met Debbie and her friend as they were walking out of a takeaway on Eastbank Street.

One well-wisher wrote on Katrina’s justgiving page: “Your dad would be proud of you”
