Concerns raised over out-of-town private hire in Crawley Concerns have been raised over the use of private hire cars which are not licensed by Crawley Borough Council. The vice-president of Crawley Private Hire Association said townspeople’s safety was being put at risk by drivers who were not properly insured. Athif Khan, 36, a self-employed private hire driver, said passengers would not be able to claim for compensation should an accident happen on journeys starting and ending in town. Mr Khan, of Langley Parade, Langley Green, said: “Everyone knows about it but no one is doing anything about it. “It’s putting us out of business.” A Crawley Borough Council spokesman said: “We’re aware of Mr Khan’s concerns and are investigating. Vehicles licensed by other local authorities which are used for journeys starting and ending in Crawley may not be properly insured to take paying passengers so it’s crucial that they are not used. “Vehicles licensed by Crawley Borough Council will have a plate on the back and inside with the council’s logo displayed.” source: http://www.crawleyobserver.co.uk/news/c ... -1-6859598 |

Complete and utter tosh as usual about insurance being invalid. See the latest case in the Court Database section. |

Do I laugh, or do I cry? It is a difficult one to call Sussex. personally i am still just in the laugh camp but it will only take a few more cases like this to put me in the cry camp. |

The companies doing this, are licensed in Crawley and have offices there and already use Crawley licensed drivers and cars. They also have operations licensed in the adjacent area of Mid - Sussex where they use drivers from there and some other plates as well. These cars/drivers are then given work in Crawley ( which has been booked by someone expecting a Crawley car and driver who knows the local area) which says stuff you to the Crawley drivers and £££££ to the operators bank balances. They charge high weekly rents. See Shanks v North Tyneside for the reasons that this is wrong under current laws. |
