Taxi danger driver put schoolchildren at risk

A 30-year-old dangerous driver who put children at risk as they walked to a Nelson primary school has been warned to expect jail.

Tassawar Abbas Shah struck at 8-50am over several hundred yards of Hibson Road close to St Paul’s Primary School. His actions at the wheel of a taxi caused “near misses” as pupils were making their way to the premises and were being dropped off nearby by parents.

Shah, of Hartley Street, Nelson, admitted at Burnley Crown Court dangerous driving in the Vauxhall Zafira on June 5th.

He was given an interim driving ban. The defendant had initially indicated a not guilty plea to the offence.

Judge Beverley Lunt, who adjourned the hearing until September 11th, for a pre-sentence report and granted Shah bail, said she “didn’t see any way of avoiding immediate custody”.

She told the court: “It’s a bad piece of driving. There were near misses.

“He was told by police to pull over and he’s defying them. He’s prepared to endanger others.

“It would have to be an immediate custodial sentence. I can’t see any way round it.”
