Plymouth man accused of causing crash by grabbing taxi wheel

A MAN has appeared in court accused of grabbing the steering wheel of a moving taxi and causing it to crash.

Joseph Dezell, aged 21, allegedly leaned over and held the wheel before it collided with a bus stop, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

He is to face a judge and jury after pleading not guilty to three charges after the incident on April 26.

Dezell, of Southside Street, the Barbican, denied causing danger to road users by interfering with a motor vehicle.

He is said to have interfered with the Volkswagen Passat without lawful authority or reasonable cause in such circumstances that it would have been obvious to a reasonable person that it was dangerous.

Dezell further denies the less serious alternative offence of causing criminal damage to the taxi either deliberately or recklessly.

He also pleaded not guilty to causing criminal damage to a bus stop post belonging to Plymouth City Council and its contractors Amey.

The court heard that the male driver, carrying four people, complained that Dezell had grabbed the wheel of the vehicle – causing it to crash.

Judge Paul Darlow set down a trial for October 14.

But he warned Dezell that the case could be called on any time from September if court time became available.

Dezell was released on bail on condition that he does not contact any prosecution witnesses.
