Taxi driver found with four illegal tyres on his cab during spot checks in Foleshill Road



A total of 34 taxis – private hire and black cabs – were checked, including 27 from Coventry and seven from Nuneaton and Bedworth.

A taxi driver will be prosecuted after all four tyres were found to be illegal during night-time checks by road safety bosses in Coventry city centre.

The driver, snared in Foleshill Road, was immediately taken off the road and now faces court action.

Police were joined by staff from Coventry City Council and inspectors from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) in the operation carried out last Friday evening.

The aim was to make sure the vehicles were not in a dangerous condition and that drivers were obeying the terms of their licence.

Any vehicles found to be in a poor state were immediately taken off the road until repairs were carried out.

Police also issued suspended prohibition notices, allowing drivers to use their vehicles as long as they could prove they had faults fixed within 24 hours.

A total of 34 taxis – private hire and black cabs – were checked during the night, including 27 from Coventry firms and seven from Nuneaton and Bedworth.

In total 22 of those from Coventry were found to have no problems at all, while two needed a new tyre which was changed at the scene and two were told work needed to be carried out on minor mechanical problems.

Another taxi was found to have faults including lights, no first aid kit and problems with a ramp to help disabled passengers.

Of the Nuneaton and Bedworth taxis, three were fault-free, with others needing work to areas such as tyres and lights and one driver faces prosecution for having a vehicle in a dangerous condition after all four tyres were found to be illegal.

Councillor David Galliers, chairman of Licensing at Coventry City Council, said: “Checks like this are vital to make sure people can be confident they and their families are travelling in roadworthy vehicles and that they can enjoy a night out knowing they can get home safely.

“None of the drivers complained about being stopped and many of them praised the checks and said more should be done and we’d like to thank them for their co-operation and understanding.

“The safety checks showed a very high standard and it is a credit to the work of taxi firms and the Council in recent years.

“And the officers from VOSA were very complimentary of the overall condition of the Coventry cabs. They said the vehicles were all in better condition than the last time they visited the city two years ago and that the Coventry taxis compared well to those in other towns and cities.”

Hundreds of taxis have been checked in the city since the tests started in January 2007.

You can't educate pork. I bet he's one of them drivers who live day to day instead of week to week. He'll go out and earn enough to live.
