Number of minicabs operating in London surges 26% in two years

The number of minicabs plying their trade on the capital’s streets has increased by 26 per cent in just two years, figures showed today.

Department of Transport statistics found there were 62,800 licensed private hire vehicles in London in March 2015, up about 12,500 since 2013.

The staggering rise is partly a result of the growth of the minicab app Uber which has brought thousands more vehicles onto London’s roads.

Mayor Boris Johnson is pushing for new powers to cap the number of private hire vehicles in the capital, which is rising by more than 1,000 a month.

The latest figures are even higher with Transport for London reporting 68,639 licensed private hire vehicles in the week starting August 10, up 347 from the previous week. The number of drivers rose to 85,368, an increase of 612 on the previous week.

However, the number of black cabs is just 22,327, a rise of just 27 on the week before, while the number of black cab drivers was down 11 to 25,057.

Lib Dem leader in London Caroline Pidgeon said: “It is possible for London to have both a flourishing taxi trade and private hire industry, but for this to occur we need fair regulation and proper enforcement of existing rules.”

Yep and GMBPDB membership 322    nothing to do with having become a collaborators organisation then

Earnings well below the minimum wage for virtually ALL of the drivers and working hours regs prepetually broken by 99% of drivers with of course the full knowledge and co=operation of the Licensed Proprietors .

ITS A FEKKING CRIMINALLY DANGEROUS CESS PIT INDUSTRY .................A DISGRACE TO ANY CITY FFS

Most working 7 days a week for £1.20 a mile, less 20% and every day running costs.

Brilliant. Great career.

Yep, long hours are dangerous, especially when drivers are arriving in London to drive for Uber under false promises of £600 per weekend from all over the UK and literally living in their cars.
Nice.
Nice smell too.

Kalanick is reportedly worth over $60,000,000 ..... nice gig if you can get it .... all off the backs of drivers who are lucky to clear £750 a week after seven 14 hours days.

and in the same manner apparently many taxi drivers are now concerned about 3 year licenses costing too much

this is despite the cost of a 3 year license not supposed to cost too much more than a 1 year badge (its a cost of issue thing)

and despite the DfT being asked to give advice on how to implement the three year badge

and despite the majority of cab drivers being totally retarded

That maybe because some Councils are simply trying to charge 3 times the cost of an annual badge.
