Heated scenes at City hall with police called to control crowd of protesters


Police were called to City Hall today after black cab drivers stormed the building to protest against unfair licensing rules for London taxis.

More than 30 officers, including some in riot gear and with police dogs, patrolled the crowd of around 300 drivers at the entrance of London's government.

Earlier, a key public meeting was suspended after taxi drivers began shouting from the public gallery when Boris Johnson called them "Luddites".

They also objected to London Assembly deputy chair Tony Arbour calling them "those people".

Moments later at least 30 more cab drivers who had not been allowed into the already overflowing chamber, ran into the building, pursued by police.

During the fracas several members of the City Hall security team were allegedly punched, pushed and verbally abused. One official was knocked unconscious and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. He is understood to be in a stable condition.

Black cab drivers are angry that Transport for London is not imposing strict enough licensing conditions on Uber drivers, who they warn are putting public safety at risk and leading to the demise of the historic trade.

The row erupted during Mayor's Question Time when Mr Johnson was asked about the introduction of electric cabs. He began: "Can I just say to all the Luddites in the room who don't want to see new technology..."

But his response was drowned out by shouts and jeers from dozens of drivers in the public gallery and the meeting was suspended.

The session was reconvened in another room with restricted public access, but later returned to the empty chamber after pleas from the Mayor and opposition members.

The taxi drivers protest moved on to Parliament Square in Westminster.

Mr Johnson told The Standard: "It is to be greatly regretted that one of our security staff was assaulted and knocked out.

"We love direct participation in our democracy and people getting their views across but there's got to be respect for people trying to do their jobs".

Labour leader on the Assembly, Len Duvall, said: "Whilst there is no excuse for the disruptive, and in some cases violent, actions of some in the audience the Mayor needs to understand that it was his name calling which in part sparked today’s incident.

"City Hall should be a forum for debate and discussion about the issues, not insults and mudslinging."

Assembly deputy chair Tony Arbour described the disruption as "unnecessary and unfortunate".

He added: "The Assembly is fully aware of the depth of feeling within the licenced taxi industry – but this kind of disruption is unhelpful to the fight for their livelihoods."

However, Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association said: "I don't think Boris's Luddite comment was the smartest of moves but it escalated out of all proportion.

"From then on it all went downhill, a perfect storm of misinformation, chaos, bad management and bad over-reaction.

"There were people pushing their way in the door and unfortunately as a result of that people were hurt and we condemn that totally.

"I put this firmly at the door of those who packed the hall with TfL students so there was not enough room for the drivers, and at over-reaction from the police."

As usual the press concentrate on the 2% of todays events that went heated.

The protest was for the whole in good spirits, but as usual the Blonde Buffon had to get insulting.

Another catalyst was that TFL filled had the seats with their staff in an attempt to block the public getting in, a security guard banged his head as drivers pushed to get in when a few more places were allowed ....... but it was a bloodbath according to the dick Tony Arbour, a tory mouth on a stick who once ran away from me when I approached him at city hall on a non taxi related subject a few years back.

And they talk about BOJO as a potential future PM .......................................... god help us if he ever is

Perhaps he should realize that this level of passion aroused in people usually means they have a genuine cause and if he listened and talked to them perhaps this sort of thing wouldn't happen

He wasn't a licensed Taxi driver.

Is BOJO intending making all the Tube trains driverless, as they are on tracks it'd be a lot easier a task than making cars driverless, Buses also, they at least stay on a single route....I wonder how Londons other Luddites feel, the Tax Paying Luddites as compared to the Unemployed techno embracers dumped on the dole.

TT will tell you that it wont happen. The systems for making the underground driverless is being tested as we speak at a test facility not 8 miles from where I am sitting now.

You mean Old Dalby the thing is though that the Victoria line was built in 1967 with Automated trains the drivers weren't strictly necessary but the technology has been around for nearly 50 years and the docklands light railway from the start had driverless trains but with a trainman on board who could drive it in the event of a system failure

Shh, don't tell TT where it is. The technology that was around 50 years ago is nothing like it is today. I am told that this system is absolutely brilliant. We probably have almost as many London underground trains here as they do in London.

Docklands railway is not underground =D>

Victoria line trains are in not driven but they cannot take the staff off because of the physical layout of tunnels less than a foot clearance between the train and the tunnel wall ...............which is why unless they open out the tunnels there will never be staffless trains .............................and as on the Victoria line that staff member will

be in the front cab...........FACT

As for bojo and the luddites =D> =D> =D> just another stinking piece of Tory Vermin spouting sh!t

Anyway Vermin Gramps dont let facts get in the way of another attack upon the workers ehhhhhhhhhh.
