Taxi drivers assaulted teen before robbing him in row over fare A TEENAGE reveller was grabbed around the neck and punched by two taxi drivers before being robbed of £20. Cabbies Zazakat Mohammed and Raheel Ahmed carried out the attack after a row over a fare from Hanley to Sandbach. Ahmed had driven the 18-year-old to Hanley's Sainsbury's store to get cash to pay for the £50 fare. But when the passenger refused to pay that much Ahmed was joined by Mohammed and they carried out the robbery. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard the incident happened at 1.55am on February 15. Prosecutor Richard McConaghy said: "Ahmed said it would be £50 to take him to Sandbach. The teenager said it ought to be closer to £30. He did not have enough money so he was taken to the cash point at Sainsbury's. "Ahmed was on his mobile to Mohammed by bluetooth. The teenager changed his mind and indicated he was going to get out. "Ahmed said it would be £5 for taking him to Sainsbury's and there was a disagreement about that. "The teenager said he was pinned around the neck to stop him getting out of the car. He managed to struggle away. "Mohammed then arrived and they demanded money from him. "Mohammed struck him to the face and then grabbed his wallet. The wallet had £20 removed from it and was thrown back on the floor. The two men left." Mohammed, of Ledbury Crescent, Birches Head, and Ahmed, of Chaplin Road, Normacot, pleaded guilty to robbery. Delroy Henry, representing both men, said it was an 'absolutely disgraceful' incident. Judge David Fletcher sentenced Mohammed to 24 months in prison, suspended for two years, with 200 hours unpaid work. Ahmed was sentenced to 23 months in prison, suspended for two years, with 160 hours unpaid work. Both men were ordered to pay £250 compensation and £900 costs. The case comes after The Sentinel revealed more than 800 complaints have been made about Stoke-on-Trent's taxi drivers in just three years. Ahmed has been suspended by Stoke-on-Trent City Council since the incident and will have a his licence reviewed by a panel of councillors. But Mohammed – who has previous convictions for disputes over fares – drives minibuses and is not licensed by the council. His taxi licence was revoked by the council in 2014. Councillor Randy Conteh, cabinet member for safer city, said: "We moved swiftly to suspend Ahmed's licence as soon as we were made aware of the incident and he has not been allowed to work as a taxi driver since. His licence will now be reviewed in light of the court ruling." Dave Currie, regional secretary of the National Private Hire Association, said: "It was obviously a horrible case of overcharging and what they did was wrong. I fully expect the licensing panel will revoke his licence. That will take his living of him." Read more: http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Cabbies- ... z3nOQb3Fif |
