Bradford PH Drivers Call For CCTV In Cars

The Bradford Private Hire Liason Service want the council to help foot the bill to protect passengers and staff.

A group of minicab drivers in Bradford are calling for more private hire cars to be fitted with CCTV cameras to make both staff and customers safer.

The Bradford Private Hire Liaison Service also wants the council to help foot the bill for the equipment, saying it’s part of their safeguarding duty to do so.

Chariman Khurram Shehzad says “There’s been false allegations on drivers that have been proved wrong four months down the line. That driver has been suspended for that time and had family and stress issues- and then found innocent. There’s no compensation for that driver. Something like this could save all the time and stress that these accusations cause.”

“In Bradford the council is doing a really good job working with police and taxi drivers to protect children. They believe taxi drivers are ears and eyes of the public regarding safeguarding. So a camera device in the car will save many issues, picking up inappropriate comments or other things.”

“There’s been issues in Rochdale and Rossington with grooming and child sexual exploitation- thus the cameras would help keep the public and the drivers safe.”

The ideas will be discussed with the council at a meeting between the BPHLS and councillors next week.

I wish some drivers would wake up and get CCTV primarily for themselves. For protecting both themselves and their livelihoods.

Protecting and reassuring punters is a secondary, albeit important, issue.
