Milton Keynes Council to encourage taxi drivers to install CCTV in their vehiclesMilton Keynes Council is set to actively encourage taxi drivers to install CCTV in their vehicles.
At a previous meeting of the council’s taxi forum, a presentation was given by a company called Verifye which listed the benefits of installing their CCTV system in licensed vehicles.
According to the presentation, a trial in Doncaster where vehicles were installed with the cameras saw a ‘significant drop’ in threats to driver safety.
And Adam Ward, senior licensing practitioner, told the latest forum today: “We think it’s a good idea and we want to encourage the trade to have CCTV. But we don’t think at this point we should make it a requirement.”
However taxi drivers who were present raised concerns that police forces were sometimes reluctant to prosecute people captured on camera due to the quality of the images, which may not be sufficient in a court of law to prosecute someone.
They then raised the question in turn whether it would be worth the £648 (plus £90 installation) it would cost to implement them.
