Harlow councillor cleared of any wrongdoing over bias claims

No further action will be taken against a councillor after an investigation into bias claims.

Harlow Council chiefs cleared Cllr Phil Waite of any wrongdoing after he granted planning permission to a minicab firm he used to work for.

As chairman of the council's development management committee Cllr Waite gave his casting vote to allow Metro Cars permission to turn an empty unit of Mill Court into a 24-hour minicab office.

A Mill Court resident at the meeting said she felt "cheated" that Cllr Waite did not declare an interest in the item.

The Labour councillor admitted he used to work for Metro Cars when questioned during the meeting last month, but insisted his past would not influence a decision.

A Harlow Council spokesman said: "The council carried out an investigation and has responded to all known complainants in writing. This investigation is now complete."

Cllr Waite gave the casting vote in a 3-2 decision to allow Metro Cars to proceed with plans.

It is not known when the work is expected to begin.
