Taxi fares in Dundee set to be frozen

Taxi fares across Dundee are set to be frozen for the second year in a row.

The Taxi Liaison Group decided that fares should be frozen at a recent meeting and provided it is approved by council’s licensing committee, fare prices won’t change until April 2017.

Graeme Stephen, of the Dundee Taxi Association, said the two-year freeze was good news for the customers.

He added: “At the meeting last week, the percentages that calculated the fares showed they were more or less evening out and making little to no difference whatsoever.

“It’s the second time in a row the prices will freeze unless there are major changes in the economy.

“So, if the price of fuel shoots back up, there would need to be a new round of calculations. But, personally, I can’t see that happening. It’s good news for the customer as it’s another year of making a small saving when they take a taxi.

“Any fare rises for the year are calculated by taking in factors such as the price of fuel and insurance, along with changes in the average living wage.”

Mr Stephen said the drop in fuel prices was a “big factor” in the decision to maintain the current starting rate, which stands at just over £3.

He added: “Fuel prices dropped from about £1.30 a litre to around £1.07 or £1.08 a litre.

“So drivers are not really losing out on the freeze, as we are saving a decent amount on the cost of diesel.

“The calculation takes in the average price of fuel, the RPI (Retail Price Index) of the average salary and the overall RPI of the economy. When it was worked out, the massive drop in the average diesel price was balanced out with the other two percentages.”

Jonathan Stewart, the manager and operator of The Royal Arch in Broughty Ferry, said the price freeze was a good thing for pub-goers.

He added: “For people using taxis to get to pubs, I think this is good news.

“Taxis are such an important service when it comes to transporting people safely after they have enjoyed themselves on a night out. The freeze in price can only be a good thing and could even mean more people use the service to go to pubs.”

A Dundee City Council spokeswoman said: “The matter was recently discussed at the Taxi Liaison Group and will be brought before the licensing committee on November 5.”

So everybodys wages across the country are calculated solely on the price of diesel ? So nobody else, regardless of what job they do, will get a pay rise this year because fuel prices have fallen :?

Minimum wage up by 20p an hour yet once again the needs of everyone else put ahead of taxi drivers. =D> #-o
