Taxi fares into Wakefield city centre for just £1

People could be able to flag down a taxi and travel into the city centre for just £1.

Wakefield Hackney Carriage Association wants to introduce a Pound Back into Town scheme, which could help boost trade for drivers.

Under the scheme, hackney carriage drivers could be flagged down on their way back to the ranks in the city centre.

The passengers would then be charged £1 per person for the journey.

And all journeys except for those back to the taxi rank would be charged as normal.

The Pound Back into Town scheme has already proved successful in Bradford, Barnsley and Wycombe.

Wakefield Council’s licensing committee will decide if the hackney carriages participating in the scheme will be allowed to display the Pound Back into Town logo in their vehicles at a meeting on Friday.

The logo says “flag me down for £1 per person into town”.

The scheme hopes to increase city centre footfall and combat the “dead mileage” of journeys for drivers back to the taxi ranks.

The council report said: “Vehicles that are in the scheme, having dropped off a fare, can be flagged down on their return journey to the rank.

“Passengers would be charged just a pound for their journey back into town.

“The journey would end at the rank where the vehicle normally works from. If passengers wanted a different destination they would pay the normal fare.”

Wakefield Council controls hackney carriage fares by a tariff and a meter.

It is an offence to charge more than a metered fare journey but there is nothing to prevent any driver charging less.

This was proposed a few years ago in Lincoln. Had passengers coming to the rank wanting to get a taxi home for a pound. Also, passengers could end up paying more for a taxi than the metered fare in a seven seater. Wakefield drivers will be sorry if they do adopt it.

Dear old Mick Pollard wanted this scheme in Gateshead, his biggest opposition was the bus companies.

He sure did. We used to do it in Mansfield, it was OK until some OAP pulled their bus pass out.

Five people in a cab paying £1 each to get back into town is a good deal if your in your district.

Err, isn't that how it already works ? #-o
When someone needs a cab they flag one down, is charging £1 going to make those who don't want to go into town change their minds and get a cab just for the sake of it ?

I am sure there is a VOSA license needed to cover this type of work.
Special restricted licence

Special restricted licences are used to operate a licensed taxi on a local service. You can only apply for this licence if you’re a licensed taxi operator. A local service is one where:

stops are no more than 24.15 kilometres (15 miles) apart
at least one stop is within the area of the district council that issued your taxi or private hire vehicle (PHV) licence
The service must be registered with the local Traffic Commissioner.

No, you can do "Shared Rides" but I remember it being called "Passengers at separate Fares" in Taxis. It is not a VOSA License but you have to follow other rules which I think are in a Road Traffic act, 1988 I think, but you have to go through some hoops like 25% or 75% of Drivers asking the LA for it in writing. Been a while since I looked at it.

Found it, Road Traffic Act 1985. Para 10 for Separate Fares Immediate Hiring and Para 11 for Advanced Booking Separate Fares Hiring. The figure is 10% of Licence Holders request in writing.
