Violent taxi passenger jumps into canal and teenagers hide in rubbish chute before being tracked down by police dogs

A violent taxi passenger jumped into a canal in a bid to escape after being tracked down by a police dog.

It’s understood the cabbie stopped in Bloxwich Road North, Short Heath, at 8.30pm yesterday evening when his drunken passenger vomited over the back seats.

The 19-year-old, from Coalpool, reacted angrily to being asked to clean up his mess and lunged at the victim, swinging punches, before it’s suggested he used a hammer to smash the cab's windows and wing mirrors.

PD Ivan and his handler PC Jon Wood tracked the man to a nearby canal towpath where the suspect kicked out at Ivan, but was quickly downed by the five-year-old.

PC Wood, said: “He threatened both Ivan and myself and shouted something like ‘I’m not scared of the dog’ – but that didn’t appear to be the case when Ivan was released to detain him. He even jumped into the canal in a bid to escape but was quickly back on dry land and in the back of a police van.”

He was later arrested on suspicion of assault.

Earlier in the evening PD Flint tracked down a group of suspected phone thieves who were hiding in a rubbish chute.

Flint and his handler PC Carl Foster were called to Erdington at around 7.20pm following a 999 call from a man whose nephew had been mugged for his mobile phone.

The victim joined officers on a patrol car tour of the area and pointed out the suspects near the Yenton pub.

They made off but six-year-old Flint guided PC Foster to a rubbish chute in Chester Road where two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old were found hiding submerged under household waste from neighbouring homes.

PC Foster, said: “It wasn’t a pleasant hiding place… Maybe they thought the smell would throw Flint off the trail. Unfortunately for them, it didn’t.”

The three teenagers and the taxi passenger all remain in police custody.

Taxi passenger charged with attacking cabbie after being asked to clear up own vomit

A taxi passenger has been charged with assaulting a cabbie, and smashing up his car with a hammer, after being asked to clean up his own vomit from the back seats.

Charlie Jones, from Goscote Place in Coalpool, is set to appear before Walsall magistrates next month accused of attacking the driver in Bloxwich Road North, Short Heath, on Sunday evening.

It is also alleged the 19-year-old later kicked a West Midlands Police dog – five-year-old German shepherd Ivan – which was deployed to the scene to help track the suspect.

Scrap metal dealer Jones is due to appear at Walsall Magistrates Court on November 24 where charges of criminal damage; possessing an offensive weapon; racially-aggravated assault; causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal; and using threatening, abusive or insulting words will formally be put to the teenager.
