Woman racially abused taxi driver after drinking 14 cans of ciderTHE victim of a frenzied attack that put her in intensive care has appeared before York magistrates for racist abuse.
Kyle Illingworth, 24, broke his girlfriend Olivia Rose Louise Heppell's jaw, nose and eye socket, and was jailed for five years on October 6.
York magistrates heard she spent the next day binge drinking. Cathy Turnbull, prosecuting, said just after midnight Heppell called the taxi driver who had brought her home a racist name and refused to change from her pyjamas into day clothes when police told her she had to go with them.
They eventually put a coat on her before taking her out to a police vehicle.
Her solicitor Neal Kutte said: "It was bizarre behaviour".
It had been a very difficult time for her that had caused her to behave out of character. He said the couple are still together as Illingworth had hit her on only one occasion.
On October 6, the Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst called Illingworth's attack on her "one of the worst examples" of grievous bodily harm he had seen. He heard she spent a lengthy period in intensive care afterwards.
Heppell, of Ascot Way, Acomb, pleaded guilty to racial abuse and obstructing a police officer. The offences breached conditional discharges imposed for theft.
Magistrates allowed the discharges to continue, fined her £125 and ordered her to pay £150 court costs, £85 prosecution costs and a £20 statutory surcharge.
Ms Turnbull said police were called to Heppell's home early on October 8 because Heppell and a friend had left the taxi without paying.
"She was heavily in drink and she was shouting," said Ms Turnbull.
She later told police she had been drinking since 10am and had had 14 cans of cider and a shot.
Mr Kutte said she spent 18 hours in police custody following her arrest. She was suffering from anxiety and depression and was heavily affected by alcohol when she hired the taxi.
She and her friend had gone into the house to get some money.
