‘Lewd’ Doncaster taxi driver stripped of license loses Crown Court appeal

A Doncaster taxi driver, whose licence was revoked due to lewd conduct towards an elderly female passenger, has lost his Crown Court bid to have it reinstated

Wadik Singh of St Oswald’s Drive, Edenthorpe, who worked for Mick’s Minicabs, was found to have used inappropriate language and behaviour towards a 68 year old female passenger last year.

Following a complaint by the passenger, Doncaster Council investigated and revoked his licence.

An appeal by Singh to Doncaster Magistrates was dismissed.

The 50-year-old appealed to Sheffield Crown Court this month which also turned down his appeal.

The judge, Mr Recorder Iqbal QC, said that the court had found the complainant’s “serious allegation” proven and Mr Singh was in “serious breach” of his “considerable position of trust”.

His Honour said that “Public safety is of paramount concern to both the [licensing] panel and the court”. £400 legal costs were awarded to Doncaster Council.

Councillor Chris McGuinness, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “It is essential that the public have complete confidence in our taxi drivers.

“Doncaster Council takes complaints of inappropriate behaviour by our licensed taxi drivers very seriously and, where appropriate, is prepared to revoke a licence in order to keep the public safe.

“We are pleased to see that both the Magistrates’ Court and latterly the Crown Court have supported with our decision by dismissing each of Mr Singh’s appeals.

“The vast majority of drivers are decent, law abiding people who work very hard to provide a good service to their customers.”
