Vale phone theft taxi driver's licence renewedA taxi driver who pocketed a mobile phone he found on a shop floor has managed to hold on to his job.
Craig Meek was in the M&S store on the A82 in Dumbarton on June 3, 2014 when he saw a phone on the ground.
He picked it up, made no effort to identify the owner and later sold it on.
Mr Meek, of Third Avenue, Alexandria, was seen taking the phone on CCTV, traced by police, and later arrested for theft by finding.
The incident saw Mr Meek called before the licensing committee of West Dunbartonshire Council on Wednesday, October 21 as he attempted to renew his licence.
He said: “I wasn’t thinking, I don’t have an explanation for it.
“I realise it was wrong and I have paid heavily for it with a £600 fine and my lawyers fees.”
Mr Meek said he was not on duty at the time of the theft, and said all items left within his taxi are immediately returned to the taxi office.
Councillors on the committee unanimously agreed to renew Mr Meek’s licence.
