'A genuinely nice man': Tributes to taxi driver Diarl Singh killed by his own cab

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Hull taxi driver who tragically died doing the job he loved.

Diarl Singh, 54, was killed when he was hit by his own car as he tried to stop the vehicle from rolling down the street in Woodfield Lane, Hessle, in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Singh has been described by his family as a doting husband and father, who would do anything for anyone.

Speaking on behalf of Mr Singh's family, his nephew Mike Singh said: "He was a very loving man who lived his life for his wife and child.

"He had such a warm smile and gentle nature. Within minutes of meeting him you would realise that.

"He was so gentle, kind and soft, a true gentleman."

The family say his death has left them devastated.

Mike, 46, said: "It was just a tragic accident, it is beyond belief, and what has happened will stay with us forever."

Born in India, Mr Singh moved to the UK in the early 1980s, before setting up home in Hull in 1987.

He was well known for running the Cottingham Road Mini Market, where he was in charge for 15 years.

His nephew said: "He was a hard worker, he loved dealing with the public.

"He was very talkative, a very nice man and he took pride in his work.

"He was just genuinely nice – there was not a single person he had an argument with."

After leaving the mini market, Mr Singh turned his hand to running fish and chip shops in Willerby Road and Chanterlands Avenue, where he stayed for four years.

He joined Hull Hackney Carriage Drivers seven years ago.

Mike said: "He just loved talking to people. He was so friendly, he liked the interaction he got with people through the job."

Mr Singh was married to his wife of 35 years and the couple have a 16-year-old son.

"He loved spending time with his family and going for meals or going on holiday," Mike said.

"He was a very doting father and husband."

The family would also thank everyone for their messages of condolence and support following Mr Singh's death.

A special guard of honour will now take place at his funeral, as a tribute from his taxi colleagues.

There will be a special convoy leaving the Sikh Temple in Parkfield Drive, west Hull, at 11.30am on Monday.

The convoy of black cabs will travel, along with the funeral cortege, along Anlaby Road, Albert Avenue, Spring Bank West and Chanterlands Avenue before arriving at the crematorium.

The tribute has been organised by taxi driver Neil "Nelly" Woolston and his colleagues.

Peter Nilsson, of Hull Hackney Carriage Drivers, said: "We are gutted, he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

"We have spoken to his family and asked if we can do a guard of honour as a mark of respect to him.

"He was such a loved guy, he would do anything for anyone.

"You could not wish to meet a more lovely guy.

"He will be sadly missed by all of us.

"For us, this is a chance to say goodbye to one of our own and a great man."

Mr Singh's funeral will take place at the Chanterlands Avenue large chapel at 12.30pm on Monday.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
