Uber app to launch in Nottingham today

Controversial app Uber has announced it will launch in Nottingham today.

From 4pm, people will be able to request a ride by the private hire firm, which uses a cashless system, where customers order and track a cab on their smartphones.

The company says it can offer cheaper prices than rival taxi firms because it is more efficient by providing the nearest drivers and using a centralised meter.

It says a journey from the train station to the University of Nottingham's halls of residence would cost about £6, and from Queen's Medical Centre to the Royal Concert Hall would be £4.50.

Max Lines, the company's general manager, who is overseeing the Nottingham launch, said: "Uber has been transforming the way people get about their cities all over the UK. At the push of a button, people can get a ride which is convenient, safe and affordable. "

The app, currently operational in 58 countries, works by customers registering a payment card, which is automatically debited after a taxi ride.

I wonder which private hire firms will be losing drivers? Queens med to the royal centre would be £6.00 on our meters without stopping. I wonder how many people would require that journey?

Didn't Uber just fight a massive court battle arguing their system isn't a meter ???

I think they're using that run as an example because the new Tram Stop at the Queens Medical services the Royal Concert Hall.
