Gangs stealing money and phones from clubbers at Sauchiehall Street taxi rank

ORGANISED gangs of criminals are targeting revellers in one of Glasgow's busiest nightclub zones.

Crooks are fleecing drunken clubbers of money and mobile phones at a taxi rank in Sauchiehall Street, the Evening Times can today reveal.

Police said the majority of incidents are taking place between midnight and 3am and the busy taxi rank is the groups' main focus.

With around thousands of people descending on the city centre at weekends, it can be seen as an "ideal target" for criminals.

Chief Inspector Mark Sutherland told the Evening Times: “City centre streets, like any other crowded place, can be an attractive place for pickpockets.

"We would advise late-night revellers to keep an eye on their belongings and make sure they are kept safe and out of reach of potential thieves.

"A skilled pickpocket can take valuables from almost anyone, but it is obviously much easier if the intended target has been drinking alcohol."

Police said the group is made up of both males and females, who are believed to be in their late teens and early 20s.

Wallets, purses, smartphones and loose cash are among the items nicked by the group.

Senior police also believe incidents of pickpocketing at the taxi rank are under-reported as people may think they lost their phone or had it stolen in a nightclub.

High visibility police patrols in the city centre are being stepped up in a message to potential criminals, while also providing reassurance for the public.

NiteZone wardens have also been briefed on the suspects' description and what 'pickpocket' signs to look for.

CI Sutherland, area commander for the city centre, added: "Even when you’re on a night out, it is vital you take care of your personal belongings.

"Following simple safety precautions, including keeping your bag closed can help prevent theft.

"Keep personal belongings, such as purses, wallets, and mobile phones out of sight and in zipped or secure pockets.

"There are pickpockets who will specifically take advantage of people under the influence of alcohol.

"Our officers will be on the lookout for thieves and will be supported by public space CCTV operators but please be vigilant."
