Council prosecutes two men for operating as illegal cabbies at Stansted AirportTwo drivers have been prosecuted for illegally operating private hire vehicles at Stansted Airport.
Londoners Andrzej Bernacki, of Carlton Road, and Yusuf Dur, of Morning Lane, were stopped in separate incidents by Uttlesford District Council enforcement officers who were taking part in a multi-agency crackdown on May 12.
Bernacki admitted he had been carrying out airport runs since entering the UK 19 months earlier.
He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on November 19 charged with not having the licences for a private hire driver, a private hire vehicle or a private hire operator and with taking fee-paying passengers.
He pleaded guilty and was fined £100 for each offence. He was also ordered to pay £399 costs, a £20 victim surcharge and a £150 court charge.
Dur was stopped later the same day while driving a Transport for London (TfL) private hire vehicle, despite not having a private hire driver's licence. He pleaded not guilty on November 5 but changed his plea when the case went to trial on November 23. He was fined £126 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20, a court charge of £150 and costs of £504.
Cllr Derek Jones, UDC's lead member for enforcement, said: "This will serve to drive home the message that taxi drivers operating illegally within our district will not get away with it. There is no excuse for breaking the law, and proper licensing ensures the safety and security of passengers."
