Frightened taxi drivers install CCTV

FRIGHTENED taxi drivers are installing CCTV in their cabs amidst concerns about attacks and malicious allegations.

In the wake of the sex abuse scandal that rocked the Rotherham trade, the council has been looking into the compulsory introduction of CCTV in taxis, an idea first mooted by taxi drivers two years ago but dismissed as being too expensive.

The council has not ruled out forcing cabbies to having CCTV in the future but taxi drivers are already taking matters into their own hands and installing their own cameras to protect themselves.

They say cheaper equipment has now made this possible and up to a third of Hackney carriages already have them in their vehicles. Some private hire firms are also installing cameras.
