Worksop minicab owner GUILTY of failing to display license platesThe owner of a Worksop minicab company has pleaded guilty to a licensing offence after failing to display licence plates correctly on his vehicles.
David Marshall, owner and director of Gateford Private Hire Limited, was prosecuted by Bassetlaw District Council after telling one of his drivers they could remove the rear licence plate from a private hire vehicle between journeys, Mansfield Magistrates Court heard on November 30.
It is a legal requirement to display license plates at all times, and removing them is a criminal offence.
During his hearing, Marshall said he “did not realise” he had committed an offence, after one of his vehicles was found by enforcement officers without a rear licence plate at Aintree Retail Park on the weekend of the Grand National.
The court also heard how, when interviewed by the council’s licencing enforcement officers, Marshall did not accept the plate should be displayed when the vehicle was not working as a private hire vehicle.
By instructing his drivers they could remove the plates, he committed a criminal offence and also breached the conditions of his vehicle licence with the council.
Marshall pleaded guilty to the offence and walked free from court with 28 days to pay £750 in prosecution costs.
Councillor Josie Potts, chair of licencing at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The council’s licensing department work very closely with other authorities to conduct pro-active enforcement to ensure compliance with legislation and licence conditions.
“It is important that the licence plates are correctly displayed to ensure that members of the public, and licensing enforcement officers, can easily identify licenced vehicles.
“The council takes licensing of private hire vehicles very seriously, to ensure the safety of both their owners and the general public.”
