Woman banned from getting in a taxi on her own



A WOMAN has appeared in court after breaching an anti-social behaviour order – which banned her from getting a taxi on her own.

Lucy Baggaley was handed the Asbo prohibiting her from riding in a cab alone after she assaulted a taxi driver.

Magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard the 21-year-old breached the order on October 17.

Prosecutor Giles Rowden said: "At 1.25am a police officer attended Hassell Street, in Newcastle, to a report of a someone – the defendant – refusing to leave a taxi.

"The officer recognised the defendant and asked her to leave the taxi. She refused.

"She was verbally abusive to the officer and was clearly drunk. She was arrested."

Baggaley admitted the breach and a charge of being drunk and disorderly.

She also pleaded guilty to further charges of sending an offensive message via a public communication network and wasting police time.

The court heard she called police at 4.30am on November 8, saying she was going to harm herself.

She made a number of calls on November 14 making similar claims.

Officers attended but found no evidence she was going to hurt herself.

The court heard Baggaley, of Telby Grove, Newcastle, had a number of previous convictions.

Mike Kimberley, mitigating, said the defendant had recently been diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum.

He said: "On the night of October 17 she had been out with her mother.

"There was a falling out and she was going to go home on her own in a taxi.

"The taxi driver wanted the money up front and she said she would pay at the end of the journey. The problem then occurred."

Mr Kimberley said Baggaley was working on her issues and a lot of progress had been made in recent weeks.

Magistrates handed Baggaley a six-month community order with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

She must also pay prosecution costs of £300, a £180 criminal court charge and a £60 victim surcharge.

sounds like another one we should "export" to Australia or perhaps the Falklands she can abuse the sheep on the way home instead of PH drivers !

What a stupid idea to ban her only when she's on her own, what happens if the passenger she shares with gets out first.

Obviously she would have to get out as well or it has to be planned so that she can't be on her own. Simple enough really.

Much simpler plan refuse to pick her up full stop the trade should band together Hackney and Private Hire and have a scheme similar to pub watch where if any one is found guilty of assault against a driver they are barred from every Taxi and Private hire in the district.

That's what should be happening first, and the police should only be used when a driver picks her up in error.
