Taxi fares in Falkirk not to rise until 2017

Taxi fares across the district will not go up until October 2017 at the earliest.

Talks between Falkirk Council and the members of the trades’ representatives the Falkirk Taxi and Private Hire Car Forum have resulted in agreement there is no need for an increase until then.

Fares and charges have to be set every 18 months and the council as licensing authority may alter them or keep them unchanged.

The last review, effective from October 1, 2013, saw the ‘running mile’ cost go up by three per cent from £1.73 to £1.78.

At its meeting on Tuesday the council’s executive was told that at a series of meetings the trade had repeatedly confirmed it had “no desire” for a rise in the rates.

The drop in the cost of fuel has played a key part in its thinking.

Latest figures show that unleaded petrol is, on average, 30p a litre and diesel 32p lower than when the last tariff increase came into effect.
