Pensioner upset by ‘no dogs’ taxi

A REDDITCH pensioner was left heartbroken after a taxi firm refused to take to her and her dog to the vets.

The disabled woman said when she called RTS taxis on Tuesday (December 7) to pick her up and her yorkshire terrier to go down the road to the vets they refused.

The 84-year-old was trying to take her pooch to get his injections and was offended when the operator told her they did not have a driver who would take a dog because of the risk of mess.

“I was heartbroken,” she said. “Although it is only a few minutes away I can’t walk that far and I didn’t know how I was going to get my dog to his appointment.

“He is only a small dog and he is bathed and sent to the parlour every week. He is my life and love and what keeps me going.”

She had to call another company, A2B Taxis, to get there. When the driver arrived he told her he would always arrive at a job but if the dog was dirty, too big or unruly they too might refuse to take it.

A spokesman from RTS Taxis said: “Some of our drivers have had bad experiences where there has been a lot of mess left in their cars by animals. If someone is all glammed up for a night out the last thing they want to do is sit in a dirty car.

“It is really the drivers’ choice as to whether they take them or not unless it is a guide dog for the blind in which case no taxi can refuse.

“However we do our best to get a driver to take animals especially if it is to a vets appointment.”

Don't wish to appear insensitive here, but if she can't get her dog to the Vets once in a while then how does she get it to the grooming parlour every week?

Why was she offended? It seems to be a new craze, who can be offended the most.

And for that matter surely a small dog could travel on her lap and not have to touch the inside of the vehicle ? Or do like one of our regulars who has a Yorkie she puts a small blanket on the seat and has a clip to attach the dogs collar to the seatbelt so it doesn't move around

Why don't other punters do that? I'm the same as you, I pick a guy up who's got a Staffie, it sits on the floor in the front footwell.
