TAXIS COULD BE CHEAPER THAN BUSES

TRAVELLING by taxi could be as cheap as taking the bus when fares go up in Doncaster later this month. The hike - which will see most adult single fares increase by 20p - is the fourth one this year and has been blamed on increased costs caused mainly by sky-high fuel prices. But for a family or group of friends travelling together over a short distance it could mean that a taxi ride - offering door to service at a convenient time - will set you back the same price.

For example, when the increased fares begin on November 19, it will cost a family of two adults and one child under 16 with a bus-pass £6.80 to get from Wheatley Hills into town and back. The same journey, following Free Press enquiries to three separate Doncaster taxi firms, would cost between £6 and £7 in a cab.

The difference is slightly more on a longer journey, though may not act as much of a deterrent when the convenience of getting a taxi is taken into account. The same family travelling from Bessacarr into town and back would spend £6.80 on bus fares, whereas a taxi would set them back around £8, while a trip to Kirk Sandall and back on the bus would be £8, but more like £10 by taxi.

One Wheatley Hills resident, who did not want to be named, said: "Where is the incentive for people to use buses or park and ride schemes? I'm sure if I could drive a car I would use it every time. "Doncaster has a great food market - my family love to shop there - but I'm not sure that it will be economical to do so for much longer."

But First Buses commercial director Brandon Jones said that there were still a variety of options available to bus passengers: "Despite the fare increases, we would encourage our customers to purchase our discount tickets which still represent good value for money. "It depends very much on our customers' travel requirements - we still have our South Yorkshire day ticket which allows you to travel anywhere in South Yorkshire for £3.50, as well as weekly and monthly equivalents which make the cost for those travelling regularly extremely good value.

"We recognise that people are not going to welcome the increase but we have to make these tough decisions to ensure we are covering our costs."
Mr Jones added that the company had promised a prize freeze on fares for the whole of 2006.

I always welcome storys like this.

Red Ken is hiking up the cost of a SINGLE tube journey to £3 after Xmas, so when 4 buisnessmen arrive at paddington from the Airport, the tube is no longer a cheaper option at £12!

So even the skinflints will think about jumping in a Taxi now. :D

Once upon a time way back in the dark ages when one could earn a decent wage without even trying. One morning when it was cold and wet. I picked up 4 women in Albion road, Stoke Newington. They only wanted to go to the Angel tube. They told me that they were fed up and cold waiting for the bus.
When we got to their destination and paid me, they realised that the fare (with extras) was cheaper than what it would have cost on the bus for the 4 of them.
They became regular riders.
Moral of this tale.. It ain't new. lots of people know this.

Then one has to wonder why this isn't spread across the local newspapers, instead of the greedy ba*****s stories we read all the time.

Could it be that we are our own worst enemies? :-$
