Bay taxis found below legal standards following checks



POLICE have been putting Torbay's taxis under the spotlight in the run up to Christmas.

Officers checked both private hire and Hackney carriages at the start of the month.

While the majority were fully legal and roadworthy, three vehicles were found to be below legal standards.

Two of the 24 vehicles checked were immediately taken off the road for defective tyres and a further one was issued with a lighting defect rectification.

PC Sarah Harvey, who led the operation, said: "With this being one of the busiest times of the year police are keen to ensure passengers know they are being carried safely in roadworthy vehicles and we were pleased with the general level of compliance.

"Future multi-agency operations have been planned to conduct spot checks on licences vehicles."
