Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward in a bid to trace the driver

A 22-year-old cocktail waitress was the victim of a distressing hit-and-run after a night out in Liverpool.

Nicole McGugan was on her way home after catching up with a group of friends in the small hours of Friday.

She crossed the road at a set of traffic lights and was hit by a taxi.

The next thing she knew she was in an ambulance on the way to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Two male passengers jumped out of the private hire vehicle to assist Nicole, but the driver left the scene.

Police are now trying to trace the taxi involved in the incident on the junction of Moss Street and Erskine Street, Islington, near the Staples store.

Nicole was let out of hospital nearly 12 hours later, with her right thumb broken in two places, bruises all over her body and a grazed stomach.

Nicole told the ECHO: “I’m still feeling terrible. There’s not enough paracetamol in the world to help me right now. My neck feels all horrible and I can hardly move it.”

The injured woman works as a cocktail waitress at bar and restaurant Pan Am on the Albert Dock .

She said: “I can’t go to work at the moment as I have a bandage round my head and a black eye. Who knows when I’ll be well enough to go back?

“I have an appointment with a hand surgeon on Monday morning who will hopefully give me some sort of idea.”

Nicole added: “My Christmas has definitely been affected by this. We normally go to my uncle’s house but I was telling my mum today that I don’t want to go anymore. I woke up this morning looking like the Elephant Man and I’m just not up for it.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward in a bid to trace the taxi driver.

A spokesman said: “ Merseyside Police can confirm they were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a taxi.

“Officers were called to Moss Street/Erskine Street, Islington, at 3.30am on December 18 to reports that a 22 year-old female had been hit by a silver Ford Mondeo, which failed to stop at the scene.

“Enquiries into the incident and attempts to trace the driver are ongoing.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 and ask for the roads policing unit or call the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.”
