35 warnings issued to Leicester taxi drivers so far under new council misconduct regime

Council officials have issued 35 warnings to Leicester cabbies under the controversial misconduct regime introduced at the start of this month.

The penalty points scheme has been introduced for 12-month trial period in a move the council said would boost passenger safety and confidence.

The 10-point scheme covers a range of measures including ensuring taxi drivers have roadworthy vehicles, do not park illegally, always wear identification badges and use their meters to record journeys accurately.

Drivers who accumulate 12 points could be stripped of their plates by councillors.

For the first two weeks, warning notices – rather than points – were given to drivers found committing infractions.

The warnings were issued both to Hackney vehicles and private hire cabs, for inappropriate parking in the city centre.

The city council is reviewing evidence from last weekend with a view to issuing penalty points to two taxis parked illegally in Jubilee Square and Horsefair Street.

In addition to introducing the penalty point scheme, city council licensing officers also carried out a spot-check test in which 33 taxis were tested.

One Hackney cab and 11 private hire vehicles were suspended for having significant faults.

Leicester mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "With the initial period at an end, enforcement is now under way properly and the penalty point scheme is in effect."

I very much doubt that.

My thoughts are (may have already been mentioned).....do they treat Council employees in the same manner? Or is this a case of victimising taxi drivers?

No they don't treat Council employees like it, they get away with murder.

It started on December 1st but for the first 3 weeks they were just warning drivers. They started to issue points on the 22nd.
I would advise drivers to appeal against any points issued and tie the Council up in appeals.
