Cabbies threaten to boycott rank over taxi marshal penalty fears

Taxi drivers could boycott one of Dundee’s busiest ranks as the furore over taxi marshals deepens.

The Unite union has said its members plan to desert the rank at the G Casino, such is their fear of being hit with penalties for alleged driving offences.

Marshals were introduced last month to ensure worse for wear drinkers get home safely and reduce risks to the public at ranks and on city centre roads.

Dundee City Council is confident that the scheme will have a huge impact on road and personal safety in the city centre.

With more than 100 complaints already made about drivers by the security staff, however, union chiefs say many feel they cannot risk their livelihoods and could avoid the location in future.

That may force some people to walk further afield on frantic Friday and Saturday nights in search of a lift home.

The question needs to be asked......what training/qualifications do these Marshalls actually have to say that taxi drivers have done wrong? What training have they actually had re the job in general? Without the correct training (whatever that is), then they will find it hard to make any charges stand.

I can also say with the experience of Cardiff having had them for a number of years.......and having had a few rows/arguments with one or two who imo went beyond their remit - just report the Marshalls for incompetence i.e trying to put obvious (beyond normal drunkedness) into yourcabs/cars. They will not like being reported, as they also need their jobs.

The action of not using the Marshalled ranks will also drive them mad, as the punters tend to give them earache when they have to wait a while. Also they will be paid until a certain time i.e 4.00 a.m. and like to have the ranks clear of punters. If people are still on the streets in big numbers......it will also p!ss the police off........as they like to go back for their coffee and doughnuts.

The ranks down here on big match/concert days are mostly avoided as the drivers can pick up easily around the City...........that really ticks them off big time. They soon realise that they need to work with the drivers........and not against them.

I had one or two over the years trying to tell me what to do (going to report me etc)! After a few heated words i.e (do what you effing like - not bothered), I ended up being quite friendly (and same back) with the Marshalls that had initially tried throwing their weight around.

My attitude to them was that I had not become self employed to be told what to do by others. Adding that if they wanted to have a go at others - then that is fine by me, however! leave me alone - and that is exactly what happened. You will find that they are mostly every day guys who only (think) that they know the job, the truth being is that they know next to nothing.

P.S. Stating the obvious; If the punters cannot get a taxi from the Marshalled ranks - they will leave them, and find the taxis parked up away from the rank.
