Taxi driver attacked and racially abused by teenage gang in Oldham A taxi driver left battered and bruised after being attacked and racially abused by a gang of teenagers said incidents like this are “nothing new”.
Masud Ali, 40, was struck over the head with a plank of wood when he tried to help a colleague who was being punched and kicked after being thrown to the ground during the assault near Asda in Shaw, Oldham, on Saturday night.
It’s believed the 25-strong group, a mix of males and females aged between 14 and 18, had been in the area for a party on nearby Moor Street, but were turned away.
They then made their way into the town centre where the attack took place outside the Motown taxi shop at around 8.40pm.
PC Adam Murphy says the gang went over to a taxi and a back window was smashed.
The first victim got out of the car to confront the yobs, but was grabbed and pushed to the floor where he was beaten.
Mr Ali went out to defend the driver, but was then attacked himself.
He said: “They were shouting racist comments at us, calling us P*** b***ards and telling us to f*** off back to our own country.
“I had bumps all over my head and the other chap was bleeding like mad and went to hospital.
“I had to take yesterday off because of the bruising and am back in work now but he will be off for a while.”
It’s not the first time Mr Ali has been assaulted while at work.
Last year, again when it had been snowing, he was attacked in High Compton by a group of eight or nine.
He added: “It’s a regular thing having groups of youths abusing people. It happens all the time.”
GMP appealing for anyone who witnessed the assault to get in touch.
A spokesman said: “We are seeking witnesses to an assault in Shaw last night. We’d urge anyone who may have seen anything or who knows any of the teenagers involved to contact us on here, via 101 or provide information via Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.
“All information is treated in confidence.”
