Uninsured taxi driver found guilty of picking up and overcharging residents

A taxi driver from Gedling has been convicted of plying for hire and having no vehicle insurance.

Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard on Thursday how Tahir Zia, of Aspley, had picked up a disabled gentleman and his son from outside the Queen's Medical Centre on April 15, 2015. This was outside of the Gedling boundary of which he was licensed.

Zia charged the men £30 for the journey, when a real estimated cost would be £15. The investigation started when the resident made a complaint about the fare.

During the trial, Zia denied he had picked up the passengers despite the complainant recording his license plate and giving a detailed description of his taxi. This was then traced by Gedling Borough Council's licensing team, who confirmed Zia was the owner.

He was found guilty of both offences and is due to be sentenced on March 30.

Portfolio holder for public protection, Councillor David Ellis, said: "Nearly all of the taxi drivers we license operate within the law and do a good job; but where we find drivers breaking the law and putting the public at risk we will take action. Thank you to our Licensing Department for their part in the investigation and the member of public for contacting us. If you spot something wrong with a taxi we license, call 0115 901 3971."

Clearly a knob, but I wonder what offence he committed for the overcharging charge?

:-k

The correct metered rate for the Journey is as per the Nottingham tarriff sheet which the driver did not use and I think the story implies that the Journey was within the boundaries of the Nottingham area

But he wasn't a Nottingham cabby, there for he isn't expected to follow their rates.

If you read the story and not the headline you will see that he was found guilty of plying for hire and no insurance. He was not convicted of overcharging.
