Petition calls for tough testing for Wolverhampton drivers

More than 100 people have signed a petition calling on the council to make passing 'stringent' tests a condition of qualifying for a cab licence.

Wolverhampton Private Hire Drivers Group has joined a growing band of campaigners who have raised safety concerns over 'falling standards' in the trade since the city council changed the way drivers need to qualify for a taxi badge. They now have only to pass a one-day course.

The 38degrees online petition, which has more than 100 signatures so far, calls on the authorities to make it mandatory for cabbies to take BTEC or NVQ customer care qualifications or a level two certificate on the role of the professional taxi and private hire driver.

It also states applicants should have held a DVLA drivers licence for a minimum of 12 months before applying for a cab licence.

The petition was launched by Ebrahim Suleman, 47, of Wolverhampton-based ABC Cars.

He said: "Too many taxi drivers do not know the rules of the road and cannot speak English. A lot people think this only applies to private hire taxi drivers but it applies to Hackney Carriage drivers as well.

A brilliant idea, Mr Suliman. Do you think that existing drivers should have to take the test too?

All this concern for raising standards is a load of crap the real motive is to try to cut the number of people entering the trade so the cake doesn't get sliced any smaller, there should be standards but the main things to concentrate on should be the ability to speak good English a basic area knowledge and a meaning full Dbs check ie they must have been resident in the uk for at least 5 years.

I would not like this organisation to represent my interests,it is calling for DVLA license to have been held for at least 12 months,people don't know the rules they claim when coming into the trade.
Part of the criteria already in place to enable an application for a Taxi or Private Hire driver license is that you must have held a DVLA license FOR AT LEAST 12 MONTHS.
Before people start petitions they should at least check the rules that are in place.

This from an association that protests to the Council because they aren't earning any money.

I'm guessing they mean a DVLA license for 12 months as opposed to another EU license for 12 months.
