Married taxi driver stalked supermarket worker and climbed onto roof to film her in her home

Syed Jafri was given a suspended sentence after the court heard how he had become 'infatuated' with the woman and followed her home on several occasions

A married stalker has escaped jail after climbing onto a roof to film a woman he became obsessed with.

Syed Jafri, 51, of Haydn Avenue, Rusholme , met the woman who worked at a food store and started to talk to her.

Prosecuting at Salford and Manchester Magistrates’ Court Andy O’ Gara said Jafri - who is a taxi driver - followed her to her home on several occasions and sent her flowers and a note to her address between April 2015 and January 2016.

Mr O’Gara said the woman told Jafri she was married and was not interested in him.

He said: “On one occasion she was walking home and he was standing outside a dentist surgery and said to her ‘Why are you giving me those angry looks?”

It then became more serious when he was spotted by neighbours climbing onto a wall and onto a roof filming the female inside her home with a mobile phone through a window.

The minute-long clip showed the female cutting her nails. Police were called by neighbours and he was arrested.

Jafri - who has three children - admitted in police interview that he had ‘become infatuated’ and only intended to take a picture of her.

He pleaded guilty to non-violent stalking at an earlier hearing.

A victim statement was read out in court and stated how she wasn’t aware he was filming her.

It stated: “This is so scary. I can’t believe I didn’t know he was around.

“This is just the ultimate intrusion of my personal space.”

She said she now felt paranoid, was struggling to cope and found it difficult to trust people.

District Judge Anthony Carr said he understood people became infatuated but this was taking it too far.

He told Jafri: “This is just a bit too much and this poor lady has been considerably affected by this.”

Jafri’s wife of 26 years sat at the back of the courtroom during sentencing.

Mr Carr added: “I just feel very sorry for the lady at the back of the courtroom. He is very fortunate that you have come to court today.”

“You have been a very foolish man and have caused a lot of distress to this lady.”

He was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. Jafri was also given a restraining order for three years against the victim.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £80 victim surcharge.

Stalking is a terrible thing to do to anyone. It ruins their lives.

This fella needs help, as well as a good kick up the a***.
