How do I recognise an ADUK recognised assistance dog ?

Assistance dogs trained by member organisations of ADUK will have formal identification in the form of a white harness, organisation specific branded dog jackets, lead slips or id tags on the dog’s collar.

Most Assistance dog service users who have an assistance dog from an ADUK member organisation will also have a yellow ADUK branded ID book. This ID book has been designed to support assistance dog owners with their access to goods, facilities and services, as defined in the Equality Act 2010 in England, Scotland and Wales, and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 in Northern Ireland.

The ID book contains information about the owner and their dog, details of the training organisation who trained the dog and its owner. It also has information about equality and disability law (specifically the Equality Act 2010, DDA 1995 and the elements which support the rights of assistance dog owners and their dog, especially when accessing goods, facilities and services.

Currently the following organisations are registered full members of ADUK:

Canine Partners
Dog A.I.D
Dogs for Good
Guide Dogs
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
Medical Detection Dogs
Support Dogs
ADUK has a logo, making it easy for assistance dog partnerships from accredited organisations to be recognised. ADUK has also produced a window sticker, enabling service providers to show they welcome assistance dogs and understand their obligations to assistance dog owners under the Equality Act 2010 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Taxi driver cleared of refusing to allow guide dog in his cab A TAXI driver has spoken of his relief after he was cleared in court of refusing to allow a blind woman's guide dog in his cab. Darlington taxi driver Alan Grieve, 59, had pleaded not guilty to two charges relating to the incident on Victoria Road last August 30. Amy Wennington, prosecuting for Darlington Borough Council, said that Mr Grieve refused to let blind woman Lorna Jones into his taxi with her guide dog, Gabby. Under the 2010 Equality Act and a council bylaw, businesses must make adjustments to accommodate disabilities, such as allowing guide dogs into taxis. Mrs Jones told Darlington magistrates: “We approached the first taxi in the rank and he said he didn’t take dogs. “I said it’s a guide dog and you have to. “After I said that he asked me if it cast hairs. At no point do I recall him offering to let us into the cab.” Graham Hunsley, defending, said Mr Grieve, of Fenby Avenue, Darlington, initially did not want to take the dog but changed his mind once Mrs Jones explained she was blind. Two other taxi drivers who saw the incident were called as witnesses and both said Mr Grieve had apologised and offered to let the dog in his cab. Witness Simon Claydon said: “It didn’t look like a guide dog to me. It had no vest or harness. “Alan said 'if it is guide dog, I’ll take you'.” Chair of the magistrates’ bench, Patrick Lengdon, said it could not be proven that Mr Grieve, a taxi driver for 21 years, had knowingly refused to take the guide dog. He said: “We have decided that it would not have been immediately clear that it was a guide dog. “It’s also unclear at which point he was told it was a guide dog. “We therefore find that the prosecution case has not been proven and we dismiss the charges.” Speaking later Mr Grieve said he was “over the moon” to be cleared. “It’s a huge relief. ADUK has also produced a window sticker, enabling service providers to show they welcome assistance dogs and understand their obligations to assistance dog owners under the Equality Act 2010 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. well a big clue would be the owner mate , dog in a green harness,owner with white stick, bumping in to walls etc ... i honestly cant understand why people immediately think that blind people are fantastic dog owners, they are just like every other owner tbh , some are good , some just don't care like the fooking alki i refused to pick up ( well the dog refused me tbh, felt so sorry for that dog , love my dogs ,( had boxers for 30 years ) i tried the old "guide dog trick" with mine mate, didn't work though , i went in a pub, barman said, " sorry mate , no dogs allowed" i said "its a guide dog mate im blind ", he replied " a pug as a guide dog ? you having a laugh then ?" i just said " they gave me a fooking pug ??" then left, still, its irrelevant now im hacking , just drive past , happy days !!!
