Taxi driver fined for working in Lichfield without a licence

A Derby man has been forced to pay almost £900 after being caught working as a taxi driver in Lichfield without a licence.

Alvin Hulley, of Raleigh Street, pleaded guilty to acting as a hackney carriage driver without a licence, contrary to Section 47 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847.

He was caught driving a paying customer from Trent Valley Station to Alrewas in his taxi last September , despite having failed to renew his hackney carriage permit after it expired at the end of August.

The court ordered the 49-year-old to pay a fine of £265, court costs of £600 and a £26 victim surcharge – a total of £891.

Councillor Colin Greatorex said: “When we licence taxi drivers we carry out enhanced criminal records checks, as well as medical and other checks.

“It’s really important that anyone working as a taxi driver has the correct licence in place before taking paying customers, and that they renew them in good time.”

I suspect he was offered and accepted a fixed penalty.
