Minicab driver runs over 2 yr old Witnesses today said there was “panic” outside a luxury Kensington hotel after a toddler was seriously injured when he was hit by a minicab. The two-year-old boy was today in hospital with serious head injuries after the incident as he was being pushed past the Baglioni hotel in a buggy by his mother just after 6pm yesterday. Bystanders saw distressed members of the child’s family being comforted by police. One told the Standard: “You could see the pram in the street. There was lots of police cars and panic going on. “They were going through the Prius with a torch light and the road was all sealed off. “I don’t know if the baby rolled forwards or backwards but the car hit them. Someone said they heard screaming. “That poor baby is in hospital with serious injuries. I know the child is in a really bad way. I just hope the baby will be OK.” The child’s pushchair was left in the street while police searched a silver Toyota Prius. The Baglioni and neighbouring houses were cordoned off following the crash on High Street Kensington at its junction with Palace Gate. Police officers were seen walking in and out of the hotel which has been frequented by Lindsay Lohan, George Clooney, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. A hotel worker said: “A lady was pushing a pram with small children and the driver crashed into them. It was a big accident.” Despite being cordoned off for more than three hours last night the hotel remained open. A receptionist said: “The matter is being dealt with by the police and has nothing to do with the hotel itself. We are not able to give any information.” The boy was rushed to hospital with a head injury and neighbouring roads were closed while police investigated the collision. Boy, one, dies after being ploughed down by minicab in Kensington A one-year-old child has died after being hit by a car outside a boutique Kensington hotel during rush hour yesterday evening. The baby, who was sitting in his pram, was struck at around 6.10pm on Monday when he was being pushed by a relative – believed to be his grandmother – past the Baglioni hotel near Hyde Park. He was rushed to the hospital, but he died just under four hours later. Police are saying the car involved was a silver Toyota Prius, a “licensed taxi”, which stopped at the scene. This afternoon a man who fought to save the child told the media he has warned the council for years about the dangerous road outside his home. Alon Mahpud ran out of his central London flat after the little boy was knocked down in Hyde Park Gate. The driver of the Toyota Prius was helping the screaming woman carry him into the back of the car before Mr Mahpud rushed to help after dialling 999. He said: “I was inside on the phone when it happened and didn’t see the car hit, just the aftermath. “The old lady picked up the baby and started to scream for help. I was on the phone to the emergency services and they asked me to run out and check on the child.” Mr Mahpud, 48, described the boy’s injuries to emergency services and called his name to try to wake him as he lay in the car unconscious. He said: “She was an old lady pushing him. I think she was in her 70s, a Russian lady - I am not sure if she was the grandmother or a nanny. “She was very upset and was just screaming and screaming. “I yelled the child’s name for a few minutes and at one point he moved his hand and was breathing heavily. “He had a bad head injury and bruises on the sides of his face.” A Metropolitan police spokesperson said today: “The car was a licensed taxi. Tragic indeed, the poor we soul, heaven knows how his parents and family must be feeling. I wonder if the Prius was running in Silent electric mode, did they not hear it coming maybe? |
