Taxi smashed up with a golf club after cars crash into each other on busy high streetPOLICE were last night quizzing a man after a golf club was reportedly used to smash up a taxi in a busy town centre.
Staffordshire Police received numerous calls about the altercation in Longton town centre yesterday afternoon.
Shoppers reported seeing a car and a taxi repeatedly crashing into each other on The Strand following a dispute between the drivers.
Now shoppers have spoken of their horror following the incident.
Pensioner Konrad Lubinski says he is lucky to be alive after being 'inches away' from being hit by one of the vehicles speeding along the pavement.
The drama unfolded as the OAP left Longton Market at 1.30pm.
The 69-year-old, of Foley Road, Longton, said: "I heard banging, crashing and shouting and the noise was so loud at first I thought it was a bomb
"Then as I was standing there I saw this car speeding down the pavement towards me
"Something inside me told me to shift quickly.
"I am grateful I did because I could have ended up in hospital or even dead – the car missed me by inches."
Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, told The Sentinel: "When you come into Longton with the kids to do some shopping it is so frightening to see something like this.
"I've never seen anything like this and I couldn't believe my eyes when the vehicles were smashing into each other."
Staffordshire Police have confirmed a man was arrested after the windows of the taxi were smashed with a golf club.
A police spokesman said: "We received multiple calls from members of the public at around 1.40pm.
"One man is in custody and officers spent yesterday afternoon gathering statements from eye-witnesses and reviewing CCTV evidence."
